13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:13-14 ESV)
How do you introduce yourself to others? Do you share with them your name? Your occupation? Your hobbies? And when you do, how do you decide what order to share them all in?
Even now, I’m tempted to tell you that my name is Mike, and I’m the Worship Director at Forest Hill Church South Park, and I love baseball, and my wife’s name is Sarah, and we have a puppy named Poe, and blah blah blah. Those are great and important things about me, but they aren’t really me. It is so easy to say my name, but so difficult to say who I am, who I really am.
Who are you really? Have you asked that question before? I imagine the shepherds out in the fields during the first Christmas had wondered that. Surely, they were meant for more than just herding sheep! Certainly, they had a greater purpose to God than to just watch animals that constantly ran away and got lost (and probably didn’t smell very good, for that matter).
Or maybe they would find a better purpose if they just shepherded a little better. Maybe then, God wouldn’t be upset with them anymore. Have you ever felt like that? Like maybe you could just work a little harder or look a little more put together or sing a little better or make better grades, and God would finally not be mad at you anymore? And while all of this was possibly going through their minds this happened:
“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:13-14, ESV)
What do you think they ever did to deserve to witness that?! What did they do to earn front-row VIP seats to a heavenly host concert? Nothing. They did absolutely nothing to earn anything, but God so loved them that He included them in the story of Jesus coming to earth! While they were trying to answer the questions of what they could do or how they should act, God sent Jesus to them.
I don’t know what you are facing right now, just like you don’t know what I’m facing right now. But I do know that God is fully pleased with those that believe in His Son, Jesus. Just like the angels sang for the shepherds to hear, God is singing peace over you and reminding you that, as you trust in Him, He is pleased with you. Merry Christmas, beloved child of God! Who you are is found in God’s love for you!
- How would you answer this question: Who are you really?
- What do you think it would have looked and sounded like to see the heavenly host?
- Where do you need God to bring peace in your life?
- If you are a believer in Jesus, when are you most aware that God is pleased with you?
- What do you need in order to stop trying to prove to God about yourself?
Father, thank You for the love that You have shown me by sending Your Son, Jesus. Thank you that who I am is found in Your love for me. Amen.
